20 x 12 x 8'
Wood, steel, Yupo, string, beads, LED lights, sound
This temporary public sculpture was part of BLINK Cincinnati, a light-based art festival, in October of 2019. An immersive light sculpture mimicking a magical forest, fabricated of synthetic paper and wood, featured the ambient sound of a rainforest, complete with various critters like insects and frogs hidden within the leaves. A team of volunteers helped to string up the individual leaves, and a structural engineer assisted in the installation of the supporting framework. In collaboration with developer 3CDC, the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, and ArtWorks, it was displayed in Sellwell Alley near Findlay Market for a total of 5 weeks. This installation was later displayed at the Columbus Museum of Art in January 2020. Read more…
She Is
outdoor sculpture
2018
18 x 6 x 4'
Like a swirling and undulating murmuration of birds, this sculpture seems to hover mid-air; defying gravity and full of motion. At every angle, the form seems to take a different shape, shifting and fluttering in the slightest breeze. Taking a closer look, the viewer finds that some of the semi-translucent pieces are inscribed with a single word in silver ink. These words were written by numerous collaborators to describe women; women known and loved by people all over the Cincinnati area. Like the women who make up our city, our lives, and our histories, this piece represents the individuals who, together, form something beautiful, strong, and graceful. The shape is reminiscent of a cloud; something that is both weightless and powerful at the same time. Women may often be seen as delicate or weak, but in true form we are forces of nature and our strength is the embodiment of beauty. When we are collaborating together we become formidable, and yet have a weightlessness of spirit and a lightness of heart… as light as air.
Concept and design created to fit the parameters of Olay’s “Light as Air” art contest. An 18’ tall steel tower has suspended within it a floating cloud-like shape, consisting of over 1,000 individual paper circles. The installation of the piece in downtown Cincinnati was coordinated with a crew of 15 people. The sculpture won grand prize in the contest. Displayed in the courtyard of P&G’s Cincinnati headquarters.
